The Vibe is Off: The Reality of Burnout.

We're the generation of side hustles and main characters, we're turning our passions into paychecks, building online empires, and creating content that connections but lets keep it real: this always on mentality is breeding ground for burnout. A recent study revealed that a staggering 70% of professionals in the media, marketing, and creative sectors gave experienced burnout inn the past year (Mental Health Survey, 2024). That's like way higher than the average worker.

Why are creatives especially vulnerable? Professor Mark Deuze of the university of Amsterdam says it's a global mental health crisis, driven by "systemic workplace stressors and the paradoxical allure of creative careers" (International journal of communication. We love what we do, but that passion can blind us to the toxic conditions, crazy hours, and financial instability that often come with the territory. This can lead to a state of exhaustion overload, where feeling drained becomes the new normal.

As one creative put it, 'They say creativity thrives under pressure", but you can't create at your best if you're running on empty (Darey Art Alade, Chief creative director, the pressure to constantly innovate and produce, often under tight deadlines and with limited reosurces, can lead to a vicious cycle of stress and exhaustion. We need to recognize that the glorification of 'hustle culture,''as discussed

The Signs: Are you running On Fumes

So, how do we know if you're heading for a meltdown? It's more than just being tired. Burnout shows up in different ways:

  • Exhaustion overlooked: Feeling drained AF, both psychically and mentally, no matter how much sleep you get.

  • Cynicism City: Becoming negative, detached ad just not caring about your work anymore. remember when you were passionate about your craft? Yeah, that's gone

  • I'm a fraud syndrome: Constantly doubting your skills, abilities, feeling like you're not good enough, and waiting for someone to expose you.

  • Sacrificing Ethics: As one of you said, 'folks are sacrificing the ethics, values and integrity of likes.

  • Thin lines: As another creative pointed out, ''The lines are thin, both bleed into each other overall health."

These signs can be subtle but if left unchecking, they can escalate into a full blown crisis. Its crucial to pay attention to these warning signs and take proactive steps to address them.

The Hustle is Real, But So Is The Damage

We're told to grind for that bag, to ''do it for the exposure.' but exposure doesnt pay for bills, and it definitely doesn't pay for therapy. In fact, unpaid or underpaid work can seriously mess with our mental and financial stability. As someone with first hand experience in a demanding creative environment shared, ''It's striaght up exploitation...my time in mumbai was horrendous with top names.. and how they worked around." This exploration is a stark reality.

The pressure to constantly create, keep up with trends, and validate our worth through likes and shares is exhausting. We're sacifying our wellbeing for the algorithm, and its taking a toll. The impact of social media on our mental health, did more harms than goods.

Finding Balance: It's not Self Indulgence. Its Survival

So, what can we do? How do we break this cycle of burnout and reclaim the leftover sanity?

  • Set boundaries.: It's okay to say no, your worth isn't tied to your productivity. As one mentions, its about setting real boundaries, asserting them, balance and equilibrium of world life balance.''

  • Therapy is a lifeline, not a luxury: Normalise seeking help. Talking to a professional can provide us with the tools to cope with stress, anxiety, and depression.

  • IRL connections matter: In a digital world, we need to priortize real life relationships. Strong Support systems can help us navigate the ups and downs of the creative life.

  • Self- care that actually works: Forget the face masks and bubble bathsm we need the self care that addresses the root causes of burnout: mindfulness, exercise, and anything that genuinely recharges your mental and emotional batteries. As creatives in a group suggest, we need paid therapy retreats, more mental health days

  • Seek Help: If you're struggling, remember that asking for help is a sign of strength not weakness
